Why did you choose to volunteer for Wood’s Homes?
I became acquainted with Wood’s through my role at the Centre for Sexuality and really respected all the incredible work that Woods/ECMHS was doing for the community. After obtaining my MSW with a clinical specialization, I didn’t feel equipped to become a therapist or a counsellor right away. I took several years to upgrade and equip myself with additional skills and when I finally felt ready, I contacted Janet Stewart, and she was so gracious in letting me have this new beginning. I’ve been working with the Eastside team for over a year now and I have learned so much.
What has been the most rewarding aspect of volunteering at Wood’s Homes?
So many things have been rewarding, but if I had to choose, I would say it all comes down to the clients and the staff. At ECMHS we don’t turn anyone away, so being able to support individuals, youth, couples, and families who are going through some of the most difficult moments in their lives is an honour. To hold space, create safety, and provide support is something that the ECMHS team is incredibly skilled at. Utilizing the single session model and having intersession consultations with the reflecting team has been very enlightening. Working with psychiatrists, psychologists, and fellow social workers to provide an intervention really ensures that we can meet the client where they are at and provide an intervention that resonates. It also provides students, volunteers, and staff with the opportunity for continued professional growth.
What is one piece of advice you would give to someone interested in volunteering with Wood’s Homes or Eastside?
Do it! I feel so grateful to have this experience and if you are a therapist who is interested in learning and growth then ECMHS would be a great fit!
